reDREAM
Story Concept 2009.4.28
It's the year 2x00. People had left the Earth and moved to the Mars where afforestation has progressed perfectly and has been terraformed completely. Now, people calls the Mars a second home. Yet, they are eaten away by the feeling of homesickness, the planet's gravity which their DNA clings to or something which they carry essentially and cause mental derangement. But they cannot return to the Earth where currently are controlled by the Plant which obtained intelligence after repeated mutations. And yet, people want to live there knowing they have to risk their own lives.
The virtual world system, reDREAM, was created to satisfy those people's desire. It was designed to fill the people's spirit by visiting the simulated Earth which is currently under a devastating condition. In other words, by using this system people can have an experience of returning to the present Earth.
On the Fifth Avenue in New York:
The street is filled with green but we can still see the traces from the past here and there. A young man named Jura is teleported here by holograph hypnosis equipment. He jumped into this virtual world to overcome his love for the Earth which he hasn't been to able to manage. He wears the suites he was given earlier and holds a gun loaded with special bullets. This world was controlled by the plant creature called "Moving Plant." Before making a trip, he was told over and over about the danger of getting damages to his spirit in the real world by getting hurt or dying in the virtual world while he is deeply synchronized with. He signed a lengthy contract and it clearly stated that he was sole responsible for his actions. Accompanied by the guide, he went into the human habitat area under the ground which was created based on the data from the many Earth orbiting satellites. This is the current condition of the Earth.
Suddenly a mob of people shows up in front of Jura. He is carried away by the people who jostled each other and taken to the inner part of the town. Everything under the ground was covered by the moisture produced by plants with unpleasant drops looking like misty rain and high humidity. Water in the puddles on the ground was dirty and muddy. All sorts of infectious diseases are everywhere. The latest multi vaccines have been protecting humans but every five years mutated virus has brought them close to extinction for long period time. However, people still live on the Earth. It's their instinct.
A warning siren roars. Moving Plant is attacking the Earth. Those who are capable fighting go to the battle field via warp machine. Several men start running. They are PCs (Play Characters) who access to the virtual word like Jura. He readies himself holding his gun and throws himself in the light of warp. They have to protect where they live.
Gun fights have already started and Jura joins in the battle. Various information comes in as guided map which is projected on the contact lenses computer terminal. He rescues the collapsed PCs near by and is infiltrated even more into the battle. In order to defeat Moving Plant, they have to destroy the main body (parent tree) which controls intelligence.
They enter in the building where is infested with green fog. This is the most dangerous fighting area. If you inhale these small groups of spores which look like fog, they will take over your spirit. Allies could suddenly turn into enemies. The inside of the building is completely overtaken by the Plant. Ivy-like plants break through the ceilings and walls and twin toward them. The building itself is an enemy.
Jura teams up with other PCs and succeeds in defeating the main body. They come back to town via warp machine. They are all moving to the same direction to receive their reward money which was calculated by the number of Moving Plants which they defeated and then were recorded on their gun. Jura receives his reward and checks his spiritual damage. In return to his spiritual damage, the feeling for home brings him relief. Now, he returns to his real life on the Mars.
He is already showing a symptom of dependency to "reDream" but he doesn't mind. He realizes that he cannot endure the life on the Mars without this virtual world. Love for home can be poisoning. Is it a necessity for human beings? Or is it just a spoiled behavior and an admiration for mother figure?
On the red planet, his heart escapes to the blue planet.
